Access decides the price more than height does

This is the single most useful thing to understand before you get quotes. A 12-metre gum in an open Westbrook backyard with a gate the chipper fits through can cost less than an 8-metre tree on a tight Newtown block hemmed in by a pool, a deck and a colorbond fence.

When a machine can't reach the tree, everything gets carried — and that is labour, which is what you're actually paying for. On the Range escarpment at Rangeville or Prince Henry Heights, where blocks fall away from the street, expect rope access or a crane and price accordingly.

Why quotes vary so much between operators

Three legitimate reasons and one bad one. Legitimate: different equipment (a crane day rate has to be covered), different disposal arrangements, and different levels of insurance.

The bad one is a quote given over the phone without seeing the tree. It will either be padded to cover the unknown, or it will change on the day when they arrive and find the access is worse than described. Neither is what you want.

Where you can genuinely save

Keep the timber. If you have somewhere to stack firewood lengths, saying so up front removes a tip fee from the quote. Same with mulch — most arborists would rather leave it with you than cart it away.

Bundle the stump. Grinding booked with the removal is nearly always cheaper than getting the machine back out separately.

Book outside peak. After a big summer storm every operator in town is flat out and prices firm up. Routine work booked in the quieter months is easier to negotiate.

What should be in a written quote

The scope (which trees, and whether that includes the stump), what happens to the timber and debris, whether traffic control or permits are needed, confirmation of public liability cover, and a price that doesn't move unless the scope does.

If any of those are missing, ask. An operator who won't put the scope in writing is the one most likely to find extras once the saw is running.

Indicative pricing

Where this job typically sits. Access is usually a bigger cost driver than size.

JobIndicative priceWhat moves it
Small tree removal (under 5m)$250 – $700Ornamentals, young wattles and small garden trees with room to work around them.
Medium tree removal (5 – 15m)$700 – $2,000The standard suburban job. Access moves this number more than height does.
Large tree removal (15m+)$2,000 – $5,000+Mature gums, camphor laurels and bunya pines, usually dismantled in sections.
Escarpment / crane-access removal$3,000 – $8,000+Steep blocks off the Range where there is nowhere to stand a machine and nowhere to drop.
Tree lopping / crown reduction$300 – $1,200Bringing a canopy back off a roof or a boundary, cut to standard rather than topped.
Tree pruning / deadwooding$250 – $800Clearance work and taking dead limbs out of a living canopy.
Stump grinding$150 – $500Priced on diameter and access. Small stumps from around $80 – $150 if the machine fits.
Emergency / after-hours callout$500 – $3,000+Storm make-safe. What it costs depends on what the limb is resting on.
Arborist report$300 – $600For insurance claims, property sales, disputes and development applications.
Green waste removal / full clean-up$200 – $800Added to the base quote when you want the timber gone rather than stacked.

Prices are indicative only. Every tree is different — access, species, what's underneath it and whether the truck can get near it all move the number. You get a fixed written quote after an on-site assessment.
