Deciduous exotics — and Toowoomba has a lot of them — look completely dead every winter. Scratch a twig: green underneath means it's alive. Brittle twigs that snap cleanly, bark shedding in sheets, and fungal brackets at the base are the signs that it isn't.
Drought-stressed natives often look far worse than they are and recover after rain. Worth an assessment before a removal you didn't need.
A lean that has changed. Cracked or heaving soil on one side of the base — particularly on black soil, where it can mean the root plate is moving. Fungal fruiting bodies at the butt. A cavity you can get an arm into. Deadwood concentrated on one side of the canopy.
