How deep it needs to go depends on what's going over the top

Turf over the top needs roughly 150–200mm below grade — enough for topsoil and root run. A slab, a shed or paving needs considerably more, and the surface roots radiating out from the stump usually have to come out too.

Tell the arborist what the space is for before they quote. Regrinding a stump because the first pass wasn't deep enough for a slab is a second callout fee.

What sets the price

Diameter first, then access. A 300mm stump the machine can drive straight to is a quick job. The same stump behind a locked gate with a 700mm opening means a narrow-access grinder or hand work, and the price reflects it.

Most stumps land between $150 and $500. Small ones with easy access can start around $80 to $150. Bundling the grind with a removal is usually cheaper than booking it separately later.

What you're left with

A pile of grindings mixed with soil, generally more volume than people expect. It can be raked into garden beds or taken away — say which you want, because removal is sometimes quoted separately.

Hiring a grinder yourself

People do, and for one small stump in open ground it can make sense. Be realistic about the machine: a hire-shop grinder is smaller than a professional one, stumps on black soil hide rocks that destroy teeth, and the day rate plus your weekend often lands close to the quoted price anyway.

Indicative pricing

Where this job typically sits. Access is usually a bigger cost driver than size.

JobIndicative priceWhat moves it
Small tree removal (under 5m)$250 – $700Ornamentals, young wattles and small garden trees with room to work around them.
Medium tree removal (5 – 15m)$700 – $2,000The standard suburban job. Access moves this number more than height does.
Large tree removal (15m+)$2,000 – $5,000+Mature gums, camphor laurels and bunya pines, usually dismantled in sections.
Escarpment / crane-access removal$3,000 – $8,000+Steep blocks off the Range where there is nowhere to stand a machine and nowhere to drop.
Tree lopping / crown reduction$300 – $1,200Bringing a canopy back off a roof or a boundary, cut to standard rather than topped.
Tree pruning / deadwooding$250 – $800Clearance work and taking dead limbs out of a living canopy.
Stump grinding$150 – $500Priced on diameter and access. Small stumps from around $80 – $150 if the machine fits.
Emergency / after-hours callout$500 – $3,000+Storm make-safe. What it costs depends on what the limb is resting on.
Arborist report$300 – $600For insurance claims, property sales, disputes and development applications.
Green waste removal / full clean-up$200 – $800Added to the base quote when you want the timber gone rather than stacked.

Prices are indicative only. Every tree is different — access, species, what's underneath it and whether the truck can get near it all move the number. You get a fixed written quote after an on-site assessment.
