Big, fast, and shallow-rooted with an aggressive spreading habit. The roots lift paving and driveways, get into old clay drains, and dominate everything planted near them. The leaf litter is allelopathic — it suppresses what tries to grow underneath.
They're also genuinely handsome shade trees, which is why they were planted. The problem is what they do to infrastructure over forty years, not what they look like.
Camphor laurel suckers vigorously from residual roots long after the stump is gone. Removal without dealing with the root system properly means shoots coming up across the yard for years.
