Waist-high hedges are a gardening job. A six-metre photinia screen along a boundary, or a mature conifer hedge that has been let go for a decade, needs elevated access and someone comfortable working off it.
The tell is usually whether it can be done safely from a two-step ladder. If the answer involves standing on a fence, it's the other job.
Exposed blocks out toward Cambooya, Westbrook and Pittsworth often run substantial windbreak rows — cypress, casuarina, sometimes eucalypt. They need periodic reduction to stay effective and stable.
A windbreak that has been allowed to get tall and thin at the base does the opposite of its job: it accelerates wind underneath rather than slowing it.
Most formal hedges want two cuts a year to stay tight, one if you can live with a looser shape. Avoid hard cutting in the worst of summer heat or immediately before a frost — both leave the fresh growth exposed at exactly the wrong time.
