AS4373 is the Australian Standard for pruning amenity trees. It governs where the cut goes — outside the branch collar, back to a lateral of adequate size — so the tree can seal the wound rather than leaving an entry point for decay.
It isn't bureaucratic detail. Bad cuts on a mature gum show up five years later as a rotted union above head height.
Frost is the reason. At 700 metres the region gets genuine frosts that coastal Queensland doesn't, and subtropical species planted a bit optimistically respond with dieback in the outer canopy.
That deadwood is what comes out in the first serious storm. Taking it out deliberately, on a still day, is considerably cheaper than having it land on something.
The usual reason people call. Limbs over a roof drop leaf litter into gutters, give possums and rodents a bridge, and abrade tiles and colorbond when they move in wind. Clearance pruning takes the canopy back to a sensible standoff without gutting the tree.
