The cone season problem
Bunya cones are roughly the size of a football and can weigh around ten kilograms. They ripen through summer and fall without warning from twenty metres or more.
That's not a reason to remove a bunya. It is a reason to know when the season is, keep cars and outdoor furniture out from under it, and consider having the cones removed before they drop if the tree overhangs anywhere people sit. A climber can take them out — it is a recognised job.
Why bunyas and hoop pines are specialist removals
Enormous, heavy, and with a branch architecture that doesn't behave like a eucalypt. The foliage is sharp enough to be a genuine problem for a climber, the timber is dense, and mature specimens routinely exceed what can be dismantled without a crane.
This is not a job for a general lopper with a ladder. Ask specifically whether the operator has taken one down before.
Cultural significance, and the retention question
Bunyas are enormously significant to the Traditional Owners of this region — the Bunya Mountains were the site of large gatherings tied to the nut harvest. Many mature bunyas in and around Toowoomba are remnants or early plantings.
None of that legally stops you removing one on your own land, but it's a reason many owners look hard at pruning and cone management first. An arborist can tell you whether retention is realistic.
